Pro-Life Convention in Weyburn Sparks Controversy

Saskatchewan Pro-Life is holding their provincial convention in Weyburn April 11 and 12, but not without some controversy.

A Facebook group called Intolerance Free Weyburn plans to protest the event and has begun an online petition to keep speaker Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), from spreading what they call his anti-gay message. The Facebook group was recently started after the creators read that AFTAH is listed as a possible anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. However, William Whatcott, board member and representative for Weyburn Pro-Life, says the Southern Poverty Law Center is a discredited source, which he calls a hard-left group that promotes homosexuality.

"Christian groups that they disagree with they label as hate sites," says Whatcott. "At one point the Obama administration entertained them and used them as a resource, but actually, I think it's this week it's actually very recent, the FBI removed the Southern Poverty Law Centre as a resource on so-called hate groups."

Whatcott maintains that LaBarbera's message is consistent with Pro-Life's mission of life and family and anyone with concerns should come to the convention and judge for themselves.

"We believe lifelong monogamous heterosexual marriage is God's plan for our life and that human beings are healthier and happier when they incorporate those values into their relationships."

Speakers at the convention include banquet speaker Linda Gibbons, who will share her experience as a Pro-Life sidewalk protester and 16-year imprisonment, Nic Davidson, who promotes chastity and "Theology of the Body", Laura Ricketts, who will speak about Pro-Life issues from the "New Feminism" perspective, and LaBarbera, who will deal with the topic of homosexuality from a conservative Christian perspective. Tickets for the two-day convention are available from Weyburn Pro-Life.

A Pro-Love protest is being planned to counter the Pro-Life convention and, in particular, Peter LaBarbera's presence and possible hate speech about homosexuals. The protest, which has its own Facebook page, is being hosted by Intolerance Free Weyburn Facebook page creators Bailey and Chris Brookes, who have also started an online petition at change.org, hoping to keep LaBarbera out of Weyburn and even out of the country.

Bailey Brookes explains their motives, "we are a community that has really tried to push for no tolerance in bullying, the Trans Gender Awareness Week...we're celebrating it here, and all of a sudden we are doing the opposite, you know, we are kind of sending mixed signals as to what do we stand for here and I think we want to clarify that. We are hearing that the community wants to make it clear that we support acceptance and we support equality."

Brookes says the group wants to make Weyburn not just the 'Opportunity City', but the 'Equal Opportunity City'.

After hearing from many residents who disapprove with the decision, Mayor Debra Button is considering asking council to take back the City funding of up to $1,000 being offered to Weyburn Pro-Life through the banquet assistance grant. Button is even considering making changes to the policy, with council's approval.

The Pro-Love rally will begin at Memorial Park next to City Hall at 2 p.m. on April 11 and will proceed to McKenna Hall. The peaceful protest is taking place for the duration of the convention and will continue April 12 at 7:30 a.m. at Memorial Park and head to McKenna Hall at 10 a.m.

Editor's note:

William Whatcott was the centre of a landmark judgement by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2013, validating Canada’s human rights hate speech laws as a constitutionally valid limit on freedom of expression.

The judgment reaffirmed the Canadian approach to hate speech, that it can be limited by law to address the problem of hate speech, unlike the American approach, in which speech cannot be limited except in the most extreme circumstances.

The court struck out some strange language in the law, which bans speech that “ridicules, belittles or otherwise affronts the dignity of” identifiable groups — language that the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission said was already ignored in practice. But it upheld the controversial legal concept of speech that is “likely to expose” certain groups to hatred.

The judges reinstated Whatcott’s conviction by a hate speech tribunal in the case of two anti-gay fliers he distributed at the University of Saskatchewan campus, but overturned it in the case of two others. (Source: National Post)

Sounds like you are being persecuted for your beliefs.

1) I have read that SPLC is being re-evaluated by a number of organizations who have supported them in the past.

Specifically the FBI as there is credible evidence that Floyd Lee Corkins took their “hate map” and used it to plan out and enact his Aug 2012 Family Research Council shooting that was later labeled an act of domestic terrorism.

2) I am intrigued to know what this "New Feminism" is that Weyburn Pro-love extols. I suspect it may be like Tammy Bruce's Feminism v2.0?

Unfortunately even though I appreciate this step back by Ms. Bruce from her RadFem days - and her acknowledgment that Feminism v1.0 has gone off the rails - it is not enough. And I will tell you why. It still accepts the core premise of Feminism v1.0 - that women are repressed (knowingly or unknowingly) by men and have been for centuries. This is incorrect and I think I have a very good arguments for that (but sorry I shall have to leave for another time as I have other pressing responsibilities that I must tend to right now and I have already spent enough time here.)

But perhaps I shall let this "new age young women" who is the product of Feminism v1.0 - explain how she herself has come to this conclusion and let her deconstruct it. [SEVERE LANGUAGE WARNING AHEAD]

Bill, I will pray for you.
God bless & Good luck.

Bill,
I am disappointed with Coren comments.

He is bringing it down to personal preferences.

But the rest of Sun News seems to be fine.
