Edmonton man who recorded daughter in shower put behind bars

EDMONTON - A city man convicted of voyeurism for using a camera hidden in a soap dispenser to record his 17-year-old daughter showering has been put behind bars.
The 50-year-old electrician, who was also found guilty of several child porn charges, was sentenced to four years in prison on Friday in Court of Queen's Bench.
Justice Vital Ouellette called the camera in the shower incident an "extreme" breach of trust and he rejected the man's various excuses, which included him first saying he wanted to know if the camera was waterproof and then that he was trying to see if his daughter had any tattoos.
"You were entrusted with those kids and this is how you repaid that trust. You abused it," said Ouellette.
The man, who cannot be named under a court ordered publication ban protecting the identity of the now-19-year-old victim, was also ordered to provide a DNA sample for the national DNA databank and placed on the national sex offender registry for 20 years.
As well, he is prohibited from working or volunteering with children or from using a computer to contact anyone under 18 for 10 years following his release.
Ouellette earlier ruled the man had "surreptitiously installed" the hidden camera after noting he had become angry about his daughter looking in the soap dispenser when she had confronted him about finding the camera as well as the fact that police found a recording of the shower incident on a VHS tape belonging to him.
The man's daughter, who testified from behind a screen so she would not have to look at her father, told court she was having a shower on Jan. 27, 2008, when she saw some white stuff in a soap dispenser mounted on the bathtub
wall and decided to check it out.
"I opened it up and I saw a camera," she testified in a halting voice, while appearing to be near tears.
After her father got angry when she confronted him about finding the camera, she said he went upstairs to the bathroom and she could hear him ripping out the device. He also accused her brother of being responsible.
Police found a drilled hole behind where the shower dispenser was mounted that led to a closet in his bedroom.
Meanwhile, an Edmonton man who was busted trying to shoot upskirt videos with a cell phone attached to his shoe at a London Drugs has avoided being put in jail.
Damien Coucke, 26, was handed a two-month conditional sentence to be served in the community, followed by 12 months of probation, after pleading guilty to voyeurism.
Court heard Friday a store security officer spotted Coucke walking around in a "suspicious manner" and then bending over to attach a cell phone to his shoe before moving close to an unsuspecting woman in a skirt.
Police were called and Coucke confessed to the incident as well as other attempts at the store. An upskirt video was found on his phone under the name: "Total Hobby."
